March of Dimes 39+ March of Dimes Logo

The March of Dimes is driving an initiative to eliminate non–medically indicated deliveries before 39 weeks. At Henderson Hospital, the Women’s services team took this very seriously because mothers may not have a choice about when to have their baby, especially if there are problems with their pregnancy or their baby's health. Some mothers may need to have their baby earlier than 39+ weeks. But if mothers have a choice and are planning to schedule their baby's birth, we want them to wait until at least 39+ weeks.

Babies born too early may have more health problems at birth and later in life than babies born later. Being pregnant 39 weeks gives your baby's body all the time it needs to grow.

Here's why your baby needs 39+ weeks:

Important organs, like the brain, lungs, and liver have the time needed to develop.

He/she is less likely to have vision or hearing problems after birth.

He/she has time to gain more weight in the womb. Babies born at a healthy weight have an easier time staying warm than babies born too small.

He/she can suck and swallow and stay awake long enough to eat after he or she is born. Babies born early sometimes can't do these things.

Henderson Hospital has had zero deliveries under 39+ weeks that was not non-medically indicated.

We are very proud to participate in this initiative with the March of Dimes 39+ Weeks Quality Improvement and Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait!
